The Nyte Vu goggles do let you see in complete darkness. Their range is limited by how dark your surroundings are. Under a full moon the range is greatly increased and you can easily walk through the woods/wherever once you get accustomed to your point of reference while wearing them. With no moon you will still have brilliant vision and can easily get where you wish to go. Getting accustomed to your point of reference while wearing them is key. Too terrible they flip all over the place when you look down and back up trying to do just that. (See downside #3) If you have a free hand to keep them in place, this isn’t an issue.
The downsides:
1. Battery life is small and extra batteries aren’t exactly cheap.
2. They fog up very quickly and require constant flipping up and down to allow for clearing.
3. If you want to flip them up and walk or go while they are in an upward pointing position, forget it since they will immediately flip back down on you. I’ve attempted to tighten them but have just come to realize that if I want to wear them I have to adjust them higher on my head if I’m in a situation that doesn’t require them. If you look at the model “head” they are on, you see the head is in standard position for walking, etc. If you take that same head and place it in a position where it is looking at its proverbial feet, the camera will be in the same position as as it is while pictured on the head in the standard position, i.e. you’re no longer looking through the lens because the unit has left your eyes and is focused straight ahead of you rather than staying in place and allowing you to view your feet. (Major issue IMHO)
4. If someone is looking through right night vision gear (remember the Nyte Vu is nothing more than a camera lens using IR light) your forehead looks like a spotlight to them from a LONG ways off. (Massive issue if you’re looking to get these for any kind of tactical purposes where the “unfriendlies” are using right night vision gear. Even through my Gen I monocular it looks like a Christmas tree.)
I couldn’t recommend this product as I currently own it. The fogging issues get extremely annoying as does the camera not staying in place when you flip it up or look down at your feet to gain a perspective on your position. The fact that your forehead is a Christmas tree to anyone even using Gen I technology is another HUGE minus if your intent is on tactical usage.
But, I could easily recommend them to those not expecting to use them in a tactical situation once the fogging and the headpiece staying in place issues are addressed. They work phenomenally well in every situation I’ve place them through in regards to viewing under low and no lighting conditions. Having them flop around and fog up on me just is too annoying to allow me to give my recommendation for.
This is just my opinion and would welcome any discussions that might come of it. It’s also my first review on Amazon so really don’t know if discussions based on reviews are the norm.
